Spring is a great time to turn your mind towards new construction projects. Warm weather and thawing ground makes it possible to do a whole range of things that weren’t possible during the winter months. Here are five great projects that will add value, function and beauty to your home or space.

1. A Beautiful Deck Area

There’s nothing quite like enjoying the outdoors from your own custom built deck. With fantastic weather just around the corner, now’s the time to start work on that deck you always wanted. This can be a spring do-it-yourself type project, or you can hire experts like Beaver Building Inc. to take the guess work out of it for you.

If you already have a deck, it may be in need of repairs after the winter. Check for rotting posts (soft spots), loose, wobbly railings, and worn spots in your deck sealant. Depending on the age and construction of your deck, how it weathers frost heaves and the type of traffic it gets, you could have nail heads that have worked their way up above the wood and other minor hazards that decks acquire with poor construction or age.

2. Additions Make Great Spaces

Additions are great because often you either need them to accommodate the blessings of a larger family or you have found that a project has taken over the rest of your house and now deserves its own space.

However, building an addition can be a huge undertaking that can last a long time, and leaving it unfinished over the winter can be risky. For this reason, it’s best to start work on your addition as soon as the ground thaws—you or your contractors will have every warm day of the year to work on it. Take care of the planning stages while it’s still cold and if you’re doing it yourself, purchase and store as many materials as you have space for.

3. Sheds, Shops and Other Outbuildings

While they’ll generally take much less time and effort than a lived-in addition, new exterior buildings will benefit from an early start if you want that space available when summer comes around. Also, since they’re a great asset for helping with organization, they’re a good preliminary to summer projects: use them to keep new tools and materials safe while you aren’t working.

4. Basement Improvements

There’s no better time to check for leaks and needed repairs in your basement than spring. Spring showers and snowmelt can expose disrepair early, allowing you to stop the growth of mold and mildew in their tracks. Consider renovating the basement with long-lasting improvements, rather than applying band-aid solutions once a year by moving everything out to the shed or stacking valuables on cinder blocks and hoping for the best!

5. New Windows

Wood expands and contracts during temperature and humidity changes throughout the year, and come spring you may find the same windows that fit snugly all winter long are suddenly allowing unwanted airflow or even letting water seep inside. If your windows are causing problems, they likely need replacement to ensure you have an energy efficient home all year long.

DIY projects can be rewarding if done properly, but hiring skilled contractors like Beaver Building Inc. can save you a lot of time and frustration. If you’re interested in making some professional improvements to your home and property this spring, give us a call at 207-699-4239.
